The R session failed to start

I have a related problem--
details:
Mac 10.7.2
R 2.15.0 GUI 1.51 Leopard build 32-bit (6148)
downloaded most recent R-studio: 0.95.265

R works by itself just fine.
When I start Rstudio, I get the error message box "The R session failed to start"

When I use terminal to determine the path of the R program I get:

Sys.which("R")

       R

"/usr/bin/R"

any suggestions?

    Hello,

    I split this discussion as there is likely a different problem occurring as to why RStudio won't start. Can you check to see if there are any log files and upload them to this discussion:

    Also have you tried the Knowledge Base article for common startup problems:

    Let me know if this takes care of it and if there are any logs. If there are still problems, we'll go from there.

    Hi Josh,
    I don't see any log files when I search my Mac with Spotlight, nor in my Library folder (which has a subfolder of logs).
    When I used Terminal to look for RStudio logs as per the Knowledge Base, I got this error:

    > open ~/.rstudio-desktop/log/
    Error: unexpected '/' in "open ~/"

    I think I have looked for all of the common startup problems in Knowledge Base article:
    Check the version of R-- I have 2.15.0

    Check for Startup files-- I can't see any startup files named .Rprofile, .Renviron, or .RData using Spotlight

    Check firewall and proxy settings-- don't think this is a problem but not sure how to test…..

    Reset RStudio's state--couldn't do this since I couldn't access rstudio-desktop folder using Terminal as per above

    Using Macports R--I'm not using Macports

    Both R and RStudio are in my Applications folder as application icons only-there are no folders containing any other data.

    Jim,

    Not sure why that command isn't working on your system and that is a strange error to see. Did you type it manually or copy and past (maybe try both)? Also perhaps see if you can navigate to the directory manually. You'll have to first turn on hidden files:

    If we get the logs, they likely will tell us what is going wrong. Let me know if this works.

    Hello,

    I'm having the same problem. I'm using a Mac and R opens with no problem but whenever I try to run Rstudio I get the message 'the R session failed to start'. What should I do? Also, I'm not very tech savy (at all), so layman's terms please.

    HI Josh,
    Pardon my delay...got busy with other stuff.
    When I typed the command in Terminal it gave me this response:
    d-128-234-20:~ jamesmandell$ open ~/.rstudio-desktop/log/
    The file /Users/jamesmandell/.rstudio-desktop/log does not exist.

    I entered the script to show hidden files and did the above again; same result.
    Also tried to find a folder called rstudio-desktop but couldn't.
    The only Rfinder item on my Mac is the application (with the "blue M&M"-like icon, which is in my Applications.

    Jim,

    Okay thanks. There might be a permissions problem which is why it cannot be found. Can you do the following:

    1) From the terminal, execute the following command and tell me the output:

    $ ls -la $HOME

    2) From the R console (using standard R), can you tell me the output of the following:

     Sys.getenv("HOME")

    My R session fails to start.....
    Windows 7, R 2.15.0
    RStudio 0.95.265 to fail to start. The Rstudio had started earlier and worked for may be 7 days but suddenly one day stopped starting. I get the error message box "The R session failed to start". The same problem with some other students..but not with some other students. R works fine. I Checked all instructions for the failure given http://support.rstudio.org/help/kb/troubleshooting/rstudio-will-not...

    Jim,

    Thanks for the update and this looks like somehow the ownership of your home directory was changed (in addition to the group) and was set to "primary" and "501" instead of jamesmandell (see the following line which the ownership and group are different than the rest of your files/directories):

    drwxr-xr-x 36 primary 501 1224 Dec 23 15:55 .

    This might have occurred from a migration of your home directory from one account to another or when restoring your computer. Either way, the problem is that your user jamesmandell, does not have permission to create a new directory since it doesn't own your home directory. If you change the ownership of your home directory back to jamesmandell, you should be fine.
